Twitter announced on Monday Promoted Accounts, a new ad service that suggests accounts that users may find interesting. As a new feature of “Suggestions for You”, Promoted Accounts are recommended based on a user’s public list of followers.
According to a company blog post, “When an advertiser promotes an account, Twitter’s algorithm looks at that account’s followers and determines other accounts that those users tend to follow. If a user follows some of those accounts, but not the advertiser’s account, then Twitter may recommend the advertiser’s Promoted Account to that user.”
Along with Promoted Accounts, Twitter also announced that Promoted Tweets and Promoted Trends are now available beyond Twitter.com, through a select number of partners including HootSuite. These partners will feature Promoted Products in search and share in Twitter’s revenue.
Twitter is currently working with more than 40 advertisers and plans to continue expanding its relationships. In addition, the micro-blogging service hopes to upgrade Promoted Tweets with text with images and video in the near future.
